Fun in the Sun at Lake Hopatcong

June 12, 2014

Other than the beaches of New Jersey where mini bus rental visitors can enjoy the sun and water activities, there is also a large freshwater lake called Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey. This lake is situated 30 miles from Delaware River and 40 miles off New York City, and was produced by the damming and flooding of the Great Pond and Little Pond, and the Musconetcong River.

This lake was previously a resort area, but now is just a residential lake with a few public access points. Compared to other lakes in New Jersey, Lake Hopatcong features many bars and restaurants that are accessible by boat. Most popular attractions here are:

  • Hopatcong State Park
  • The Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum
  • Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club

Activities at the Hopatcong State Park

The park is popular among charter bus visitors who enjoy fishing, boating and swimming. Lake Hopatcong offers great year-round fishing. During the spring, the lake is stocked with brown, rainbow and brook trout. During the warm weather, rental bus visitors can catch large mouth bass, sunfish, catfish, perch and pickerel, while in the winter, ice fishing can be done to catch perch and pickerel.

There are lots of boating activities available at the lake, ranging from canoes to large motor boats, sailboats, sailboards and jet skis. There is a boat ramp at the state park, opened seven days a week.

Swimming in the lake is also fun. Make sure there is always a lifeguard on duty. Facilities available at the bathhouse complex include restrooms, showers, changing areas, a first aid room and concession where food and beach supplies are available for purchase.

Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum

For something a little less strenuous, how about heading to the museum? The Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum is actually a rustic 19th century building which used to be a lock tender's house on the Morris Canal. This museum offers coach bus visitors a chance to take a look at the history of New Jersey's largest lake. The Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum displays an extensive collection of memorabilia, photographs, historical artifacts, and exhibits about the Lake and on the history and working of the Morris Canal.
